Airman first class Tom Allen enlisted in the Air Force after high school and served from Jan. 4, 1955 until Jan. 3, 1959. As an air policeman, he was stationed on Strategic Air Command bases in Texas, Labrador, and French Morocco. He provided security for B-36 and B-52 strategic bomber planes. The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was his favorite plane.
Tom, a Caterpillar retiree, moved to Tremont in 1974. He and wife, Bobbie, were married nearly 50 years. He had a daughter, Carrie, and son, David, who is married to Liz. Tom passed away in 2009 after a courageous 11-year battle with leukemia and lymphoma. He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Tremont.

James L. (Tony) Benson, Jr. was born April 11, 1925, in Mishiwauka, Indiana. He and his family moved to Tremont and he graduated from Tremont High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 and served until the end of W.W. II. His activity during W.W. II included B -24 Flight engineer and Top Turret Gunner, 856th and 857th Bomb Squadrons, 492nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, flew Carpetbagger Mission also on C-47 with the 492nd Bomb Group.

After he was discharged from the Army Air Force, he returned to Tremont and married Patricia Jean Hinman. They had four sons, James (Marianne) Benson, Eric Lee Benson (D), D. Brett Benson, Todd Alan Benson (D).

Tony died on September 2, 1991 at the age of 66.

Robert L Brenkman was in ROTC at Bradley University. Upon graduation he entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in Pensacola, Florida . He received his commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and was transferred to Combat Information Center School in Paradise Island, S.C. Upon completion was assigned to Airborne Early Warning Squadron 12 (VW-12) at Barber’s Point Naval Air Station, Oahu, Hawaii . His mission was to patrol the section of the radar barrier from Midway Island to Adak, Alaska. The radar barrier extended from Midway across the North Pole to the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. The objective of the barrier was to spot and report any unidentified aircraft, submarines or missiles headed toward the United States.
Bob was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Crew 12. He was the senior CIC officer and had a crew of 14 reporting to him. During this period he received additional training in Anti-Sub Warfare and CIC duties aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier. He served in this capacity until 1959 when his tour of duty was completed and he returned to civilian life.
